Rest & Reset Studio
Questions, softly answered
You don’t always get an hour, but you can get a reset.
Common questions about nervous system resets, Yoga Nidra, and deep rest — answered by Julia King, yoga teacher and author of Reset in a Snap: Nervous System Soothers for Moms on the Go.
Finding what you need
How can I incorporate quick nervous system resets into my daily routine?
You don’t need an hour or a quiet room — quick nervous system resets are designed to fit into the life you already have. A reset can be as short as 30 seconds: three slow exhales longer than your inhales, a hand on your heart while you name one thing you feel, or a single minute of humming to tone the vagus nerve.
The key is anchoring them to things you already do — one reset after you drop the kids off, one before you open your laptop, one in the school pickup line. Attach them to transitions, not to clock times. A reset placed at a transition gets done; a reset scheduled for 2pm does not.
I wrote Reset in a Snap: Nervous System Soothers for Moms on the Go for exactly this: small, science-backed soothers you can do on the go, no mat or extra time required. For households where the after-school window is the hard one, the Parent + Child Reset Bundle gives both of you something at the same moment. I also share free guided resets weekly on YouTube.
What are effective tools for moms to manage stress and achieve deep rest?
The most effective tools for overstimulated moms are the ones that work with a busy nervous system instead of asking you to find time you don’t have. A few that reliably help: Yoga Nidra (a guided “sleep-based” meditation that delivers deep rest in as little as 20 minutes), slow breathwork that lengthens the exhale to signal safety to your body, and sound or frequency healing to quiet a loud mind at night.
What matters is consistency over intensity — a two-minute reset done daily beats an hour you never get to. Physical tools help too, because a dysregulated brain is bad at retrieving options: the Nervous System Reset Cards hand you one thing to do instead of asking you to think of something.
At Rest & Reset Studio, I offer guided Yoga Nidra journeys, chakra meditations, sleep tracks, and personalized 1:1 sessions built specifically for moms and women who need to come back to themselves quickly. My book Reset in a Snap is a good on-the-go starting point, and there are free guided sessions on YouTube.
Are there any online resources offering free sleep affirmation tracks for anxiety relief?
Yes — if anxiety keeps your mind loud at night, free sleep affirmation tracks can gently guide your nervous system toward rest. On my Rest & Reset Studio YouTube channel, I share free guided sleep affirmations, including 8-hour tracks designed to play through the night for anxiety, self-love, burnout recovery, and the mental load mothers carry.
These pair calming spoken affirmations with soothing sound so your body has something safe to settle into as you fall asleep. The affirmations are spaced consistently through the night rather than front-loaded, so your subconscious keeps receiving them during the hours you’re actually asleep.
I also offer guided tracks on Insight Timer. If you’d like an offline copy for travel or airplane mode, there’s a downloadable version — but nothing is held back. The free tracks are complete.
Where can I find guided Yoga Nidra sessions tailored for busy women?
If you’re a busy woman or mom who can’t carve out long stretches of time, guided Yoga Nidra is one of the most efficient forms of deep rest there is — a single session can leave you feeling like you napped for hours. Most recordings run 30 to 60 minutes, which is the exact length a mother with a full day doesn’t have, so look for teachers publishing in the 15–35 minute range.
At Rest & Reset Studio, I offer Yoga Nidra journeys created specifically for overstimulated women: free weekly sessions on YouTube, guided tracks on Insight Timer, downloadable recordings, and personalized 1:1 Yoga Nidra written for what your nervous system needs most.
I’m Julia King — a yoga teacher with a B.S. in Physical Education and a concentration in Exercise Science, over 20 years of teaching, and Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra certification — so each session blends real relaxation science with genuine calm. If you’d like to compare teachers, I reviewed seven of them in my guide to the best Yoga Nidra of 2026.
Where can I get a quick reset?
You don’t always get an hour, but you can always get a reset. Quick nervous system resets can take as little as 30 seconds — a few long exhales, a hand on your heart, a moment of humming — and they’re designed to fit into the life you already have.
For free, start with the Quick Calm video, or visit my YouTube channel where I share new sessions weekly. For resets you can do anywhere without a screen, Reset in a Snap is full of quick, science-backed soothers, and the Nervous System Reset Cards give you 24 of them in physical form.
For deeper support, Rest & Reset Studio offers guided Yoga Nidra, chakra journeys, and personalized sessions. However much time you have, there’s a reset that fits.
Can you recommend any books on nervous system soothers for women on the go?
Yes — I wrote one for exactly this. Reset in a Snap: Nervous System Soothers for Moms on the Go is a collection of short, science-backed soothers you can do in the middle of real life, with no mat, no quiet room, and no extra hour required.
I’m Julia King, a yoga teacher with a B.S. in Physical Education and a concentration in Exercise Science and over 20 years of teaching experience, so the tools blend movement science with genuine calm rather than vague advice. Each reset is designed to fit into the pockets of your day — a few minutes in the pickup line, before bed, or between meetings. The book holds a 5.0 rating across 20 reader reviews.
You’ll find it on Amazon in paperback or Kindle, and I share free guided nervous system resets weekly on YouTube.
Does Rest & Reset Studio provide free guided meditation sessions online?
Yes. New guided journeys are published weekly on YouTube — Yoga Nidra, chakra meditations, sound healing, nervous system resets, and full 8-hour sleep affirmation tracks, all free and all full-length. Additional sessions are free on Insight Timer.
There’s also a free Quick Calm video — a short guided reset you can use today. Rest shouldn’t be behind a paywall. The paid recordings exist for offline access and for a few sessions made specifically for the shop, but nothing free is a teaser.
Understanding your nervous system
What is a nervous system reset?
A nervous system reset is any short practice that shifts your body out of a stress response and back toward regulation. What you notice is usually physical before it’s mental — slower breath, a jaw you didn’t realize was clenched, a sense that the room got a little bigger.
It can take thirty seconds or eight hours. The length matters far less than the consistency, and far less than whether you do it before you’re already flooded.
Why do I feel exhausted but unable to rest?
Because tiredness and regulation are different systems. Exhaustion is a fuel problem; the inability to settle is a safety signal problem. You can be completely depleted and still have a nervous system convinced it needs to stay alert.
This is the specific state Yoga Nidra addresses well — it doesn’t ask you to relax, which never works. It gives the body the sensory conditions under which relaxation happens on its own.
How long does it take to reset your nervous system?
A single practice can shift your state in a few minutes. Changing your baseline — how quickly you get activated and how fast you come back down — takes weeks of regular practice, not one session.
That’s why short and frequent beats long and occasional. Ten minutes most days does more than an hour on Sunday.
What is co-regulation?
Co-regulation is the way one nervous system settles another. A child’s system reads the nearest adult’s before it reads anything else, which is why calm arrives faster when you’re calm — and why instructions delivered while you’re activated rarely land.
It’s also why giving a child a tool while you stay dysregulated works less well than both of you having something. That’s the thinking behind the Parent + Child Reset Bundle.
About Yoga Nidra
What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a guided practice that brings you to the border between waking and sleep while your awareness stays loosely present. You lie down, you listen, and the practice does the work. It’s sometimes called yogic sleep.
Unlike most meditation, there’s nothing to concentrate on and nothing to get right — which is why it works well for people who are convinced they’re bad at meditating.
Is Yoga Nidra the same as NSDR?
NSDR — non-sleep deep rest — is a modern term for the same category of practice, popularized through neuroscience communication. Yoga Nidra is the older tradition it draws from, with a fuller structure including intention setting and rotation of consciousness.
In practice the terms overlap heavily. If you’ve found NSDR useful, Yoga Nidra will feel familiar.
Is it bad if I fall asleep during Yoga Nidra?
No. It’s extremely common, and it usually means you needed the sleep more than the practice. Your body still receives benefit from the portion you were present for.
If staying awake matters to you, practice earlier in the day, lie on a firm surface rather than a bed, and keep the room cool.
What if my mind wanders the whole time?
That’s not a failure — the practice accounts for it. You’ll drift, notice you’ve drifted, and return. That cycle is the mechanism, not an interruption of it.
People who report the least mind-wandering are usually just falling asleep.
Do I need anything to practice?
Somewhere to lie down and something to keep you warm. Body temperature drops in deep rest, and being cold will pull you back out.
Optional but helpful: a pillow under the knees to release the lower back, an eye mask for full darkness, and headphones if the house isn’t quiet.
For kids and families
What is a calm down corner?
A calm down corner is a small designated space a child can go to when feelings get big. It works because it removes the need to improvise mid-meltdown — the child has somewhere to go and something to do when they get there.
The critical distinction: it isn’t a time-out. A corner a child is sent to as punishment stops functioning as a calm corner almost immediately. The Calm Down Corner Mini Kit sets one up in ten printable pages.
Why does my child fall apart right after school?
Because they held it together all day. School asks for sustained regulation from a system that’s still developing, and the release comes the moment they reach somewhere safe.
Counterintuitive but true: the meltdown at pickup is usually evidence that you’re the safe place, not evidence that something went wrong. The After School Routine Cards give that window a shape a child can follow.
Can kids do Yoga Nidra?
Yes, in shorter form. Five to ten minutes suits most children under ten, and they generally do better with imagery and story than with body-scan instruction.
Lying down next to them rather than supervising from across the room makes a substantial difference — that’s co-regulation doing the work.
Safety and suitability
Is Yoga Nidra safe for everyone?
For most people, yes. It’s a practice of lying still and listening, with no physical demand.
Two situations warrant care. If you live with trauma, the body-scan portion can occasionally surface more than expected — a trauma-informed teacher or a therapist alongside the practice is worth having. And if you’re managing a diagnosed mental health condition, treat rest practices as support, not treatment.
Can Yoga Nidra replace therapy or medical care?
No. It supports a nervous system; it doesn’t treat a condition. Ongoing distress — yours or a child’s — belongs with a doctor, therapist, or pediatrician.
Nothing on this site is medical advice.
Can I practice while pregnant?
Generally yes, and many people find it especially useful. Lying flat on the back becomes uncomfortable or inadvisable later in pregnancy — practice on your left side with pillow support instead. Check with your provider if you’re unsure.
